How to choose the perfect photographer!
Updated: Feb 14
Have you ever searched for a photographer to capture that special moment in your life but were unsure how or where to start?
If you use the following 5 tips you will be sure to pick the photographer that is best for you!
Tip #1- Decide what style you are looking for
There are many amazing photographers out there, but do they capture images in style that fits you and your vision? Each photographer has a particular style, both in the way they capture images and the way they process those images. If you are not sure what your style is check out Tip #2.
Be cautious of the photographer that is willing to take a job before they know your expectations. If they do not know what you want, how do they know they have the skill, or equipment to capture your vision. It is the job of the photographer to make your vision a reality.
Tip #2 - Find a list of photographers in your area
When looking for a photographer people turn to social media for help. Social media requests for recommendations are inundated with dozens, if not hundreds, of recommendations. That does not mean the recommend photographer is right for you.
Are you able to easily find the photographer online and see their portfolio?
Does their portfolio show the style images that fit you and your vision?
Do they have a proven track record? Do they show up on time? Do they deliver images in a timely manner? Do they deliver what they promised?
Tip #3 - Cost
No matter what you do in life, cost is always a factor. Before choosing your photographer not only do you have to know how much they charge, but also what do you get for that price?
Is the fee just for the shoot or does it include digital images? Printed images? Images you are allowed to share on social media? Images that can be used commercially? Do you get print rights?
Are there extra or hidden fees?
While digital image are popular, do you want professional print products? Professional print labs typically only work with licensed business.
Tip #4 - What type of session do you want
What location do you want to be shot in? Studio? Local location? Destination? Do you want your images to include things that are important to you such as a sport or a pet?
Is the photographer comfortable in those situations?
Tip #5 - The future
You are paying a photographer to capture your precious moments. As wonderful as technology is, it also fails. Does the photographer keep a redundant backup of your images?
I recently saw a post from a photographer that completely deletes the client images from their computer 30 days after they deliver the images. They even state "Once they are gone, they are gone!" I am not saying this is a good or bad thing, but something you should know prior to booking with a photographer.
Choosing a photographer to capture your precious moments should not be left up to chance. Please ask lots of questions to make sure you know what you are getting and that it fits your style before making a choice. There is a perfect photographer out there for everyone!
